Quick Summary

IS3N (iShares Core MSCI EM IMI UCITS ETF Acc) is a large, accumulating ETF domiciled in Ireland that gives exposure to over 3,000 stocks across 24 emerging markets, including large-, mid-, and small-cap companies.
Relevant to Danish residents who want emerging markets exposure as a complement to a global developed-markets fund — the most common use case is pairing it with EUNL or IUSQ in a frie midler or ASK depot.
The TER is 0.18% per year; the fund is on SKAT’s Positivliste, which means it’s eligible for the ASK and taxed as aktieindkomst (27%/42%) under lagerbeskatning in frie midler.
Unlike Danish IMB funds such as STIIAM, IS3N does not qualify for realisationsbeskatning. Tax is assessed annually on paper gains regardless of account type outside pension.

IS3N is the default choice for Danish investors who want cheap, broad emerging markets exposure in a standard brokerage depot or ASK. It’s available on Nordnet and Saxo Bank, it’s on the Positivliste, and at 0.18% it’s the lowest-cost broad EM ETF accessible to Danish retail investors.

The straightforward part is the cost and availability. The part worth understanding properly is the tax treatment, what lagerbeskatning actually means in practice, why this fund doesn’t have the realisationsbeskatning benefit that STIIAM does, and what the China concentration and currency mechanics actually look like for a Danish-based investor.

What IS3N Invests In

IS3N tracks the MSCI Emerging Markets Investable Market Index, which covers large, mid, and small cap stocks across 24 emerging market countries. The IMI suffix matters: by including small caps, the index captures approximately 99% of the free-float-adjusted market capitalisation in each country, giving broader coverage than a pure large and mid cap EM index.

The fund holds over 3,000 individual securities. The top country exposures are China (typically 20-30% of the fund, though this has been volatile in recent years as MSCI has adjusted China A-share inclusion), India, Taiwan, South Korea, and Brazil. Technology and financial services dominate sector exposure.

The China concentration deserves a direct mention. At various points it has made up close to 30% of the fund. That’s a meaningful single-country weight, and it means IS3N’s performance is substantially influenced by Chinese regulatory developments, geopolitical risk, and changes to how MSCI weights Chinese shares. Investors who want EM exposure without China exposure should look at a dedicated EM ex-China ETF instead.

The fund switched from optimised sampling to full physical replication in August 2024. It now aims to hold every constituent in the index in approximately index-proportional weights, rather than a representative sample. Securities lending is permitted and generates additional income for the fund, which marginally reduces the effective cost.

Tip

IS3N holds 3,000+ stocks across 24 emerging markets. Around a quarter of the fund is in China at any given time. Physical replication since August 2024.

How IS3N Is Taxed in Denmark

IS3N is on SKAT’s Positivliste, the official list of equity-based investment companies (aktiebaserede investeringsselskaber). This determines both its eligibility for the ASK and its tax rate in a regular brokerage account.

Account typeTax rateTiming
Aktiesparekonto (ASK)17% flatLagerbeskatning annually. Broker calculates and deducts automatically.
Frie midler (free depot)27%/42% aktieindkomstLagerbeskatning annually on mark-to-market gains.
Pension depot15.30% PAL-skatLagerbeskatning annually. Standard PAL treatment.

In a frie midler depot, IS3N is taxed annually on unrealised gains. If the fund goes up DKK 10,000 in a given year, you pay aktieindkomst on that DKK 10,000 whether or not you sell. Gains up to DKK 79,400 per person (DKK 158,800 for couples using the doubled threshold) are taxed at 27%; gains above that are taxed at 42%.

This is the key structural difference between IS3N and a Danish IMB fund like STIIAM. STIIAM qualifies for realisationsbeskatning in frie midler, meaning capital gains accumulate tax-deferred until you sell. IS3N doesn’t. As an Irish-domiciled ETF, it’s classified as an aktiebaseret investeringsselskab and on the Positivliste, which gives aktieindkomst rates, but still under lagerbeskatning.

In the ASK, this distinction disappears. The ASK uses lagerbeskatning on everything it holds, so IS3N and STIIAM are treated the same way. The flat 17% rate applies to both, calculated annually. This is why IS3N is a perfectly reasonable choice for the ASK: you get cheap, broad EM exposure at the flat ASK rate, with no structural disadvantage relative to Danish IMB alternatives.

Tip

IS3N is taxed annually on paper gains in every account type — there’s no realisationsbeskatning available. In the ASK, the flat 17% rate applies. In frie midler, aktieindkomst at 27%/42% applies annually.

IS3N vs Other Emerging Markets Options in Denmark

FundTERTax in frie midlerASK eligible
IS3N (iShares Core MSCI EM IMI)0.18%Lagerbeskatning, aktieindkomstYes
SPYI (SPDR MSCI ACWI IMI includes EM)Approximately 0.17%Lagerbeskatning, aktieindkomstYes (added 2026)
STIIAM (Storebrand Indeks Alle Markeder global incl. EM)Approximately 0.30%Realisationsbeskatning, aktieindkomstNo (IMB structure)

IS3N is the cheapest standalone EM ETF on the Positivliste accessible to Danish investors. STIIAM includes emerging markets as part of a global all-world fund, but it carries both a higher TER and an ESG exclusion overlay – and its main advantage (realisationsbeskatning) only applies in frie midler, not the ASK.

For investors building a two-fund portfolio in frie midler who are considering the realisationsbeskatning angle, the relevant comparison is pairing STIIAM (global) against pairing EUNL (developed markets, lagerbeskatning) with IS3N (emerging markets, lagerbeskatning). STIIAM’s tax deferral advantage partially offsets its higher cost over long horizons, but IS3N plus EUNL wins on cost if you’re primarily using the ASK or pension accounts.

Currency and the “USD in the Name” Question

IS3N’s official name includes “USD (Acc)” because USD is the fund’s base currency for accounting and reporting purposes. If you buy IS3N on Xetra via Nordnet (partnerlink/reklamelink) or Saxo, you’re buying it in EUR, the fund trades in euro on the German exchange. There’s no automatic USD conversion at the point of purchase.

The real currency exposure is not to the dollar or the euro. It’s to the underlying emerging market currencies and local stock markets: the Chinese renminbi, Indian rupee, Taiwanese dollar, South Korean won, and so on. If those currencies weaken against the euro, your position falls in euro terms even if the underlying stocks hold flat in local currency. That’s inherent to holding any global EM fund and can’t be avoided through share class selection.

For Danish investors paying in kroner, there’s a DKK/EUR conversion at the time of purchase (and sale). On Nordnet’s manedsopsparing there’s no standard commission for the purchase itself, but a currency spread applies on the DKK-EUR conversion.

Tip

If you hold a significant position in IS3N and are looking to reduce the DKK/EUR conversion friction over time, keeping a EUR sub-account on Nordnet and directing dividends (or other EUR-denominated receipts) there can reduce the number of round-trip conversions you make. It’s a minor operational point but worth knowing if you’re making regular monthly contributions.

Practical Notes for Danish Investors

ASK eligible, broker-reported. Both Nordnet and Saxo Bank offer IS3N. If you hold it through either platform, all tax calculations and SKAT reporting are handled automatically. Your arsopgoerelse will be pre-filled. You don’t need to do anything manually.

Manedsopsparing available. IS3N is available on Nordnet’s manedsopsparing (monthly investment plan). Standard purchases on Nordnet cost DKK 29 per trade; manedsopsparing purchases are free of the standard commission, making it practical for building a position gradually.

Foreign broker reporting obligation. If you hold IS3N through a non-Danish broker, you must self-report your purchase to SKAT no later than 1 July of the following year. Missing this deadline can cost you the right to deduct future losses on that holding. Nordnet and Saxo both report automatically, so this only applies if you’re using a foreign platform.

Loss offsetting in frie midler. Because IS3N is lagerbeskattet as aktieindkomst, any unrealised losses in a given year are deductible against aktieindkomst gains from other aktieindkomst-taxed holdings (other Positivliste ETFs, Danish shares). They cannot offset kapitalindkomst losses and vice versa. Keep this in mind if you hold a mix of Positivliste ETFs and non-list ETFs in the same depot.

PFIC risk for Americans. US citizens holding IS3N face the same PFIC classification issue that applies to any non-US registered fund. The fund is almost certainly a PFIC under IRS rules, which triggers punitive US tax treatment and complex Form 8621 reporting requirements. This applies in the ASK and in regular accounts. Americans should read the dedicated PFIC/ASK article on this site before holding IS3N.

Tip

IS3N’s ASK eligibility and low cost make it a standard building block for Danish investors who want EM exposure alongside a global developed-markets fund. The decision point is whether you want that EM allocation in the ASK (where IS3N and STIIAM are taxed identically) or in a frie midler depot (where STIIAM’s realisationsbeskatning may matter over a long holding period).

Who Is This Fund For?

IS3N is the default choice for emerging markets equity exposure in Denmark. It’s cheap, broadly diversified across 24 countries, physically replicated, on the Positivliste, and available on both major Danish investment platforms.

The primary use cases are: adding an EM sleeve to a developed-markets portfolio in the ASK (pairing with EUNL or IUSQ); adding EM exposure in a frie midler depot where the investor doesn’t have a large enough position to make STIIAM’s realisationsbeskatning advantage meaningful; and building a simple two-fund portfolio (developed markets plus emerging markets) in a pension depot.

The fund is less suited to investors who: are primarily investing in frie midler over very long time horizons and want to maximise tax deferral (where STIIAM has a structural advantage, though at higher cost and with ESG exclusions); want to avoid China exposure (where an EM ex-China ETF is a cleaner answer); or are US citizens who need to consider PFIC consequences before holding any non-US fund.

Bottom Line

IS3N is the most cost-efficient way to add emerging markets exposure in a Danish depot. At 0.18% TER and on the Positivliste, it works in the ASK, in a frie midler depot, and in pension accounts, with lagerbeskatning applying in each. The China concentration is real and worth being aware of. For frie midler investors with a long time horizon, STIIAM’s realisationsbeskatning can be worth the higher cost and ESG constraints, but for the ASK and pension accounts, the tax treatment is identical and IS3N wins on cost.
